Meet the Staff: Philip Calabro – Education Coordinator

What sparked your interest in theatre?

I originally caught the bug from filling in for a friend at a rehearsal. I was in the sixth grade, and I had to say one line for him. It was six words. But being given this responsibility of something that was mine to take care of was powerful. Plus the confidence that I got from being told to stand and say a line in front of an audience that unique to me? I was hooked.

What do you love about working with kids?

Kids have relentless imaginations, and to watch that unfold when we create a scene with them never gets old.

What is one show you have either performed in or worked on that stands out to you?

I work as a Magician’s Assistant on a children’s magic show in NYC. Each show we perform teaches me a new lesson, but one that always comes back to me is if you work hard and truly believe in yourself, you can accomplish anything.

What is your favorite book?

Animal Farm by George Orwell

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?

I’ve never been outside of America! So honestly anywhere that isn’t America (love you US of A but I gotta get going). Though, if I had a top 5 countries it would be:

  • Tokyo, Japan
  • Madrid, Spain
  • Calabria, Italy
  • Athens, Greece
  • Stockholm, Sweden

What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

Growing up, it was Mint Chocolate Chip, but then at 12 I developed a Lactose Intolerance. Fortunately, there’s an amazing Ice Cream shop in Brooklyn, Van Leeuwen, that makes a vegan Mint Chocolate Chip, so I like to go there to reminisce on the old days.
