We drew even closer to the culmination of our first session today as we worked and worked to perfect the music, the dancing, and the staging of both of our wonderful shows. It was exciting for the KidsAct and TeensAct groups to be able to each do a full dress rehearsal onstage and for them to watch the other group and cheer each other on! Today also included pizza for lunch and a couple rousing rounds of “Yeehaw!” to follow, which kept the fun going all day long. The plays that each group has created over the past two weeks are delightfully creative and wonderful, and we simply cannot wait to share them at our final performances tomorrow!

Session One Day Eight— Practice Makes Perfect !
Can you believe show day is in two days?! Today was a day of making final edits and changes in order to prepare for our dress rehearsal tomorrow. It has been amazing to see how far these plays have come and how much they have changed over the past two weeks! Highlights of the day included solidifying our choreography with Katy, and even finishing up the grand finale of our show. We were able to see the second half of the KidsAct! show, while TeensAct! shared the first half of theirs. We have two very special plays in the works… and dress rehearsal tomorrow can only make them more magical!
Session 1 Day 7 – Refining and Polishing!
Today we took refuge from the heat at the much better air-conditioned Wolfson center, where we spent all day work shopping and refining our plays. TeensAct! worked diligently on completing a first draft of their entire play, while KidsAct! nailed down the first half of theirs with transitions and everything, adding in new comedic bits along the way. We’re excited for the fourth of July but can’t wait to jump back into working on our plays on Thursday!
Session One, Day 6— Welcome to Week Two!
This week, the countdown to our show begins! Today, TeensAct! worked with Jane and Issy to further develop their play’s world of Gods and Mortals, finalize their play’s structure, and solidify scene work. KidsAct! continued to work with Sam and Katy on dreaming up their fantastical tale of forbidden love, filled with fairies, princesses, butlers, and maybe even a dragon…(you’ll have to wait until show day to find out!) Luckily, the heat didn’t stop us from having a super fun and productive day. We can’t wait to see how these plays develop, change, and grow over the course of the week. Now, there’s only one thing left to do: rehearse, rehearse, rehearse!
Session One, Day Five— the end of a fun-filled week!
We can’t believe it’s already the end of week one! Today, KidsAct! And TeensAct! continued to devise their respective plays. Plots are thickening and characters are developing as we incorporate music, dance, and monologues into our pieces. This is a very exciting time because we are getting closer and closer to finalizing our scripts for next week’s rehearsal process. Sam also worked with TeensAct! On more commedia, and Gaylan helped both KidsAct! And TeensAct! With our musical numbers. In the midst of this busy but fun-filled day, we were able to enjoy the sunny weather with a water play break! Next week will be an exciting and intense week of rehearsal… we can’t wait to see what our plays become!
Session 1 Days 3 & 4 – Commedia & More!
Following our trip to the Berkshire Museum, we dove straight into devising our original musicals, drawing on inspiration from what we saw there. Sam also introduced both KidsAct and TeensAct to the world of commedia, which provided additional material to utilize in terms of characters that could be incorporated into our stories. Jane also taught an improv class with KidsAct, where they played with emotions, and Katy taught choreography for “Believe” from Finding Neverland, which will be the opening number. The structure of both plays – one a tale of forbidden love set in Paris and the other a story of Greek gods and mortals – is really starting to take shape!
Session 1 Day 2 – Field Trip Day
Today we took KidsAct and TeensAct on the road to the Berkshire Museum in search of material for our devised plays. KidsAct focused mostly on studying the animals in the taxidermy exhibit and in the aquarium, including mountain lions, chameleons, seahorses, legless lizards, and poison dart frogs. They chose animals that excited them, and once they returned from the museum they worked on embodying their chosen animals. Finally, they devised scenes by drawing inspiration from their animals to create characters. TeensAct studied the other exhibits in the museum and was inspired by a statue of Aphrodite to create scenes rooted in Greek mythology, one involving Kronos and the other surrounding a fight over Paris. It was an exciting day that sparked many creative efforts that will be the beginnings of our very own plays!
Session 1 Day 1 – Welcome!
The first day of camp was a resounding success! KidsAct and TeensAct spent the day playing get-to-know-you games, learning about and practicing pantomime and the rules of improv, and devising using still images. KidsAct represented fairy tales in three images, and TeensAct told stories about when they were surprised in three images. Both groups also learned a song from the musical Finding Neverland called “Believe,” and TeensAct learned a dance to the song. The day concluded with sharing the images that had been created and with a few rounds of Park Bench and Three-Headed Expert. Altogether, it was a successful and fun-filled first day!
Meet the Staff: Philip Calabro – Education Coordinator
What sparked your interest in theatre?
I originally caught the bug from filling in for a friend at a rehearsal. I was in the sixth grade, and I had to say one line for him. It was six words. But being given this responsibility of something that was mine to take care of was powerful. Plus the confidence that I got from being told to stand and say a line in front of an audience that unique to me? I was hooked.
What do you love about working with kids?
Kids have relentless imaginations, and to watch that unfold when we create a scene with them never gets old.
I work as a Magician’s Assistant on a children’s magic show in NYC. Each show we perform teaches me a new lesson, but one that always comes back to me is if you work hard and truly believe in yourself, you can accomplish anything.
Animal Farm by George Orwell
I’ve never been outside of America! So honestly anywhere that isn’t America (love you US of A but I gotta get going). Though, if I had a top 5 countries it would be:
- Tokyo, Japan
- Madrid, Spain
- Calabria, Italy
- Athens, Greece
- Stockholm, Sweden
What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
Growing up, it was Mint Chocolate Chip, but then at 12 I developed a Lactose Intolerance. Fortunately, there’s an amazing Ice Cream shop in Brooklyn, Van Leeuwen, that makes a vegan Mint Chocolate Chip, so I like to go there to reminisce on the old days.
Gearing Up for Camp
Training and preparation week for the KidsAct!/TeensAct! team is in full swing, and we could not be more excited to get the summer started! While we eagerly anticipate the beginning of our first session next week, I wanted to share the mission statement the staff developed, as shown in the photo above:
“We believe in the power of theatre to inspire and nurture young minds. We create a fun, collaborative environment where we hope to foster confidence, creativity, and ownership through devising original material.”
Looking forward to meeting our first group of young artists on Monday!
